The Benefits of Graded Readers
If you participate in the English Reader Marathon with a positive
attitude, you will …
These benefits will not appear after reading one or two graded readers. You must read many to make progress (that's why we call it Marathon!). But remember, every journey begins with the first step. Gambatte! Getting Started
Please follow these steps:
1) Choose a graded reader from the Tsurumi University Library graded reader shelf – 2nd floor, turn right. 2) To start, choose an easy level – Starter, 1, or 2. 3) Choose one that looks fun or interesting to you. 4) If you start reading and don’t like it, or it seems too hard, take it back and get a different one. 5) Don’t stop to look up words in the dictionary; just keep reading. Later, if you want to look up some words, go back and find them and look them up. 6) Read the whole book as quickly as you are able. Some people can read an easy graded reader in one sitting, while others need a few days. If it takes longer than a week to read an easy graded reader, please try to read more pages in one sitting or find an easier book. About Graded Reader Levels
For the English Reader Marathon, it’s important that you choose a book that is not too difficult. If the book is too difficult, your reading will slow down. You will not understand the story without a dictionary. Since graded readers should be read without a dictionary, you need a story that has no more than one unknown word out of 40. Try not to choose a book above your level. In time, your reading will naturally improve and you will know when you’re ready to move up a level.
Most students should start with a Starter, or Level 1 or 2 book. The sticker system Levels are different than the number printed on the spine of the book. Various publishers have different ways of choosing the level of their books. These levels do not always match from publisher to publisher. By using the sticker levels, we have a standard level system for all publishers. Use the sticker numbers and colors that have been attached to the books by the Tsurumi Library staff. After reading a graded reader, you will take an online quiz at Xreading.com. Passing the quiz is proof that you read the book. If you choose an easy book, it will be easier to pass the quizzes! Your teacher will know which quizzes you took and whether you passed or failed. Taking an Xreading Quiz
Before taking a quiz:
1. Make sure you have read the whole book and have a general understanding of what happened in the book. Skim through the book a second or third time after you finish the book to make sure you know the story. 2. Make sure you know the main characters’ names and their roles in the story. 3. Review in your mind the events that happened in the story, because the quiz will ask you to put the events in order. 4. You will only be allowed to take a quiz on a book once! You have only one chance, so you should be sure you understand the book before you take the quiz. Log in: 1. Open the Tsurumi University course at Xreading.com. 2. Your name is already registered. 3. Log in with your User Name and Password. * Never reveal your User Name or Password to another person. * Never take a quiz with another student. 4. Click #1 “Take your quizzes here!” 5. Choose the publisher or series from the drop down menu. The Tsurumi University Library has many books from these series: Oxford Bookworms, Cambridge, Penguin., and Cengage Foundations. 6. Choose the title of the book you read. Be sure it’s the same publisher, series and level as the book you read. 7. Take the quiz online. You should have the book with you as you take the quiz. You are allowed to look at the book as you take the quiz, but you only have a limited amount of time to take the quiz (15 minutes). Many of the questions are True/False. Some are multiple choice. Some are "___ said to ___ ." You have to identify which person said something to who. 8. After the quiz, you will be asked to rate the book, i.e., whether you liked the book or not. Give a rating then continue. 9. You will be told immediately if you passed or failed the quiz. You will not be told your score, just whether you passed or failed. If you passed, congratulations! You get credit for reading that book. If you failed, well, “C’est la vie!” Get another easy book, read it and take another quiz in a few days. Or you can re-take a quiz on the same book if you get permission from Kevin. If you fail a quiz … Don’t worry! You may not pass every quiz. Think of it like basketball. If you miss a basket, just try again. Sometimes you’ll succeed and sometimes you won’t. But the more shots you take, the better you’ll get, and after a few tries, you will probably pass the quizzes – AS LONG AS YOU READ THE BOOK. Please don't get discouraged. Once you get used to the quiz formats, you will be more confident. |
